Robbie Silver, Assistant Account Executive for Westbound communications, covered internships and networking at this seminar with this years PRSSA chapter.
Silver discussed his background story of how he entered the world of public relations. He first started out at an art institute where he wanted to pursue a career in the culinary arts field. It was not until he read a quote by Steve Jobs, that persuaded him to change his career path. The quote states:
“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future”.
Silver later advises PR majors to “find their niche”. There are many broad areas for PR’s to work in including, hospitality, non-profit, transportation, health care, transportation, entertainment, education, and government.
He also illustrates how to build a professional network, which is to build professional organizations, create your own business card, and to make timely connections.
We thank Robbie Silver for his time and advice on how to network and obtain internships.
